Earlier this week, I shared an article from RELEVANT magazine about what to do when you’re in a season of waiting. Waiting is HARD, especially when you want something so bad, like companionship. The article reminds us that;
1) Waiting isn’t a punishment,
2) It won’t last forever, and
3) You don’t have to sit idly around and do nothing.
“You can wait and live at the same time.” – Mandy Hale
Mandy’s right. When I find myself wanting to text that ex-boyfriend or go to the freezer for a pint of Ben & Jerry’s, I stop myself and sometimes say out loud,
“Stay strong, Beth, God’s got this!”
As I sit in my season of waiting, I’m working on getting to know Jesus better. One of the ways I do that is by reading K-LOVE’s Encouraging Word of the Day, oftentimes before I even get out of bed.
On Feb. 4, it was Philippians 4:6-7:
“Do not worry about anything, instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Jesus Christ.” (NLT)
This piece of scripture reminded me that God definitely has my back, and the peace we get when we trust Him will definitely guard my heart, and yours, as we wait out this season.
The Scripture says ‘tell God what you need ….thank Him for what you have’. God’s not asking us to stuff our feelings (by texting that guy/eating that ice cream, or pulling ourselves up by our boot straps). He also doesn’t tell us not to have them. He created our feelings and they are often an indicator of what’s beneath the surface.
Instead, God says ‘tell Me what you need’. Spending time with Him and telling Him what we need has the power to transform and give us a new perspective. Thanking Him can do the same. He is good. His heart toward us is good. Sometimes we forget that during a season of unsettledness ….I know I do. He is a Giver and knows our desires and needs better than we do. So let’s do as He encourages and then also take some time to listen to His heart.
Do you want to get to know Jesus better? I’ve got a great recipe for you!
Last fall, I took at class at my church called “Journey with Jesus.” This class was just what I needed to jump start my spiritual journey again. Our leader passed out recipe cards for Knowing Jesus, and I want to share this recipe with you, too!
RECIPE: Knowing Jesus
SERVES: Jesus and the World
- Quiet Time
- Quiet Place
“Be still and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10
Begin with prayer. Say or journal whatever is in your heart at that moment.
“If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer,” said Jesus. – Matthew 21:22
- Read the scripture.
- Underline the word (s) that speak to you.
- Rest in these words.
- Take your time.
- Let everything sink in and be imprinted on your heart.
- Journal your thoughts.
- Let this be your gift from God.
- Live out this faith.
I hope this recipe helps you in your season of waiting.
